Oreo Jones: Revolutionizing Chreece and Indianapolis with Hip-Hop Culture

From punk rock roots in Warsaw, Indiana, to becoming a cornerstone of Indianapolis hip-hop, Oreo Jones has traversed a unique path in the music industry. His journey, marked by perseverance and a commitment to community, exemplifies the power of staying true to one’s artistic vision.

Jones’ musical odyssey began with the Screaming Hemorrhoids, a thrash punk band he formed at 17. However, it wasn’t until his freshman year at Butler University that he discovered his passion for hip-hop. “I honestly just like going to record stores,” Jones recalls. “I’d go there and I would just browse the hip-hop section… I just fell in love with anything produced by like Dilla, tribe.”

Despite initial struggles to find his footing in Indianapolis, Jones’ determination led him to create spaces for himself and others. This drive culminated in the founding of CHREECE, an all-day hip-hop festival in Fountain Square that has become a staple of the city’s music scene since its inception in 2015.

“I feel like it goes back to me being told no too many times,” Jones explains, discussing the festival’s origins. “There was just so many artists that were just looking for space… We’re doing house parties, we’re doing house shows, like literal floors caving in.”

CHREECE has since evolved into a platform that showcases both established and emerging talents, with Jones emphasizing its role in fostering community and breaking down barriers. “I honestly think that you can’t really do anything radical unless it’s acceptable and accessible for everyone,” he states.

Beyond his work with CHREECE, Jones continues to push his own artistic boundaries. His upcoming album, “Nephew,” set for release in September 2024, promises to showcase his evolution as an artist.

Throughout his career, Jones has remained committed to the idea that creating art should be about personal fulfillment rather than external validation. “If you’re creating something with something just to be a cool person in the room, I think you’re just going to get exhausted and you’re going to be tired and you’re going to be bored,” he advises.

As Oreo Jones continues to shape the Indianapolis music scene, his journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring artists and a testament to the power of community in nurturing creativity.
