Fēi Ford, an interdisciplinary artist, stylist, and curator, has become a pivotal figure in Indianapolis’ vibrant arts scene, particularly in the Fountain Square neighborhood. Her journey from college graduate to community connector showcases the power of passion, perseverance, and the transformative nature of art.

At the heart of Ford’s work is Future Friends Holographic Magic Club, a space she inherited and has nurtured into a hub for artists and art lovers alike. “I always say that there was people that was laying down their lives… they made sacrifices,” Ford reflects on the legacy of artists who paved the way for spaces like Future Friends. This awareness of history and community underpins her approach to curation and creation.

Ford’s artistic journey began with a love for vintage fashion, which she describes as her “gateway drug” into the wider world of art and community building. This passion evolved into a multifaceted practice that encompasses styling, installation art, and curation. Her recent solo show, “Free My Flaws,” exemplifies her growth as an artist and her philosophy on authenticity.

“Free My Flaws is essentially about a space… for renewal and refreshment,” Ford explains. “I feel like every artist has to have an opportunity for renewal and refreshment… That’s why we need this, the refilling and the refillment is just about to be able to be in the best state for myself, for others, for the bigger part of the impact.”

As Fountain Square faces the challenges of gentrification, Ford remains committed to preserving the neighborhood’s artistic spirit. She sees her role as not just creating art, but fostering connections and understanding between diverse groups. “I think Future Friends is such an important space, impartial to all the things that happen around it, is because there has to be a place that educates… the community about what exists in this world,” she states.

Looking to the future, Ford is exploring new ways to leverage her skills as a connector and innovator in the arts. She’s developing what she calls her own “thesis” on how to navigate and program art spaces effectively. Her goal is to push the boundaries of creative innovation while keeping the focus on caring for people and building community.

Fēi Ford’s story is one of continuous evolution and dedication to both art and community. Through her work at Future Friends and beyond, she is helping to shape the future of Indianapolis’ art scene, one connection at a time.
