In a recent episode of “Conversation Piece with Patrick Armstrong,” host Patrick Armstrong sits down with Aaron Marshall, better known as Double A, a multifaceted artist who’s making waves in Indianapolis as both a rapper and the owner of Naptown Thrift. The conversation weaves through Marshall’s journey from his early creative pursuits to becoming a prominent figure in the local hip-hop scene and vintage clothing industry.

Marshall’s story begins with his childhood passion for drawing, which later evolved into an interest in fashion and hip-hop. He recalls, “I started to care about what I had on. I started to be in tune with, like, what my friends were listening to, which was hip-hop.” This early fascination laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.

The podcast delves into the origins of Naptown Thrift, which started as a small storage unit venture and grew into a brick-and-mortar store. Marshall explains the store’s aesthetic: “We always wanted it to feel like, you know, you’re stepping into like your childhood bedroom or… a blast from the past and you could learn something and think it’s really cool.”

As a rapper, Marshall is known for his versatility and unpredictability. He states, “I pride myself in, in having a diversity of flow and beat choice and what I sound like on a song.” This approach has earned him respect in the local hip-hop community, with Armstrong describing him as “a rapper’s rapper.”

The conversation also touches on the Indianapolis hip-hop scene, with Marshall offering insights into its diverse nature. He observes, “I think we don’t have one [specific sound]. But I think it is defined by the pieces… we truly do pull from so many scenes and so many cities.”

Throughout the interview, Marshall’s passion for both music and vintage clothing shines through, highlighting how he’s managed to blend these interests into a unique career path. His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and artists in Indianapolis and beyond.
