It’s Time, Expand Your Reach and Gain A New Perspective

Too many times, I’ve seen an artist from my city ready to give up music because they aren’t receiving support from others in their hometown. Not only does that guilt trip others into forcing support but it’s also a slap in the face to the people who genuinely show love.

I don’t make music, so I have no idea how it feels to work so hard on something and only receive a few shares. However, I am a writer, blessed with the opportunity to share my words on a platform, and am able to get a taste of what the creator lifestyle is like. I learned very early not to base my self-worth or talent on the number of likes I receive. I would continue to write even if no one is reading because it truly is a passion of mine. I appreciate any indication of support. Whether that be an in-person compliment, a sweet DM, or simply a share — everything warms my heart and adds to my self-motivation to keep going.

On the other hand, the lifestyle of an upcoming artist is completely different. Artists thrive on the support of fans and the conversion of new ones. Even huge signed artists are splitting their main income in so many different ways, ticket and merch sales are heavily dependent on their true supporters. With rising stars from social media or great connections, striving to be an artist in these times can be competitive.

Don’t question why others aren’t supporting you. Especially in a city known for showing love when the rest of the world starts to. It could be a possibility that people you went to school with can’t accept that you want more for yourself. It could be that they don’t resonate with your art. It is completely okay. It’ll get to a point where you need to step outside that cul-de-sac and put yourself out there.

TikTok for Artists

Everyone is either for or against the TikTok formula. My take is, it wouldn’t hurt to try. Being the third largest worldwide social network with roughly 750 million monthly active users and counting, an artist is bound to find a crowd they can connect with. TikTok is one of those platforms that’ll take a while to gain traction or a random video could go viral in your sleep.

As an independent artist, you should be any and everywhere your music can be shared to maximize your marketing. TIKTOK IS FREE! It may seem intimidating, but people make time for what really matters. Carve out a few hours or an entire content day. In addition to getting your music marketed on the app, users love to see the personality of the person they’re tapping into. Take this opportunity to find your people and don’t give up. On this app, you can create your own trends, and your own community, on your own time.

Instagram Reels for Artists

It isn’t a secret that Instagram’s algorithm has been out of whack for a while. The app is slowly turning into a video app and this is the time to use that to your advantage. If you want to go the easy route, repost your TikTok videos on reels. If you want to keep it fresh, remember Instagram is also becoming less of a ‘picture-perfect space.

Showing you and your artistry in real time is more relatable than a full-out production. If your feed aesthetic or fear of over-spamming the timeline is holding you back, don’t let it. Stay in people’s faces so they won’t forget. You also have the option to not post the reel on your feed, it will stay under your videos tab and your cluttering problem is avoided. Hashtags and consistency are always your friends.

Networking for Artists

Become comfortable with being uncomfortable. Being able to make an impression on someone goes a long way. In-person interactions can result in a lifelong supporter on and offline. Who knows how many opportunities you could receive because a person connected and put in a good word for you with someone else? It could also be a possibility you’re holding yourself back by trying to prove such a deep loyalty to your crew. Sometimes it’s okay to branch out and work with other creatives.

This could result in your art being in front of different audiences, rocking with you because that common denominator puts them onto someone new. If you’re shy, start small. Like, comment, and share other creatives in your space posts. Building an online relationship is a beautiful start to many things. Work your way up to those events you go out to and eventually go somewhere where no one knows your name and make that good first impression.

My Final Thoughts

Learn to play the game. No one will go harder for you than yourself. If you don’t like your situation, do something about it. Don’t give up, I believe in you.
